Ball State Buckingham Career Day 2018

Buckingham team members took over Ball State University’s campus in September for the second annual Buckingham Career Day! We appreciate everyone who came out and spent the day with us exploring career opportunities in the property management industry. For those of you that couldn’t make it, find out more with a recap of the event below.

Buckingham Career Day kicked off with registration and networking amongst industry professionals and students at Ball State. Buckingham Companies’ human resources team conducted interviews with students for full-time and intern positions. The event officially started with a welcome lunch accompanied by a presentation from Scott Sladek, Buckingham’s Chief Operating Officer, that entailed career advice and information about Buckingham Companies as a whole. He shared what “The Buckingham Way” is all about and different ways students could grow their career potential at Buckingham.

Keynote speaker, Scott Wise, from Scotty’s Brewhouse, took the mic to speak candidly about his career path and how he made his dreams come true with his restaurant success. However, he noted his biggest piece of advice was that he learned more from his failures than he did his successes. He also noted that he came from a family of entrepreneurs and when he was a kid he was never allowed to say “I can’t” because he was always encouraged to think big.

Our alumni panel and advisory board took the stage to share advice catered to Ball State students looking to go into the residential property management and hospitality industry. Each panelist shared their story, their accomplishments, challenges, and more. The over-arching theme? Every panelist has worked diligently to reach the successful path they are on now. And, their favorite part of their job is the people—whether that is their co-workers, residents, or guests.

"This event provides students the opportunity to network with industry professionals and learn first-hand experience. As a Ball State RPM alumna, this is an invaluable addition to their education in the program that will better prepare them for the industry and career path.," says alumni panelist member and Buckingham Companies Marketing Manager Shannon Sorrells.

No party is complete without some giveaways! To cap off the day, Buckingham gave away gift cards, t-shirts, BSU fan gear, AND 10 iPads! The after party continued at Cardinal Lanes for a networking reception, bowling, pizza, and good times. We appreciate Ball State opening their doors to us again this year and letting us host this successful event. In the end, we hoped to reach students interested in a career helping people, and we believe we achieved that yet again. Buckingham Companies is a great place to grow and network in the residential property management industry. Hopefully, we’ll add some Cardinals to our growing team after this event. Until next year, Chirp Chirp!
